오랜만에 돌아온 몬터뷰입니다!
이번에는 3개국어를 유창하게 구사하시는 Mondrian AI 소프트웨어 엔지니어링을 책임지고 계시는 CTO 마이크님을 소개합니다.
◆ 안녕하세요! 간단한 자기소개 및 하시는 일에 대한 소개 부탁드려요.
Thanks for having me in this interview. My name is Mike. I am mostly responsible for how technology is used within the company and making strategic decision on the kind technology stack we decide to invest on. On the card, it is written as a CTO.
인터뷰에 참여하게 되어 영광입니다. 저는 Mondrian AI CTO 마이크입니다.
저는 주로 회사 내에서 기술이 어떻게 사용되는지, 진행하는 사업의 기술 스택을 전략적으로 결정을 하고 있습니다.
◆ 구체적으로 어떤 일을 하세요?
At a technical level, I help conceptualize the system design, be it on a project or a product that is developed by the company. Following the design, I usually work on the initial implementation to let the engineering team understand how the abstract concept can be translated into codes.
In the early days, I also worked on the devops side, setting up the servers and other IT infrastructure needed by the company for its operation and project execution.
기술적인 차원에서 회사의 프로젝트와 개발한 제품의 시스템 설계를 개념화하는 것을 돕고 있습니다. 설계에 따라서 추상적인 개념이 코드로 변환될 수 있도록 저희 연구팀의 이해를 돕는 초기 구현 작업을 하고 있습니다.
창업 초기에는 개발팀에서 서버와 다른 IT인프라를 활용하여 회사의 운영과 프로젝트 개발 업무를 진행했습니다.
◆ 몬드리안에이아이(주) 창업멤버이신데, 몬드리안에이아이를 창업하게 된 계기를 설명해 주실 수 있을까요?
I have always been a fan of solving problems. Starting a company is another way to solve problems at a bigger scale because you do it together with other people having shared interests to solve problems.
저는 혼자 문제를 해결하는 것을 좋아하는 편입니다. 하지만 회사를 창업한다는 것은 다른 사람들과 함께 좀 더 큰 규모의 문제를 해결할 수 있는 기회라고 생각해서 창업 멤버가 되었습니다.
Contradictary to the previous statement, we did not really have the clearest idea about what kind of problem to be solved when Daeeui and I decided to work together to start the company. Even though we worked together at the same company prior to the startup journey, we had to first align ourselves on which area we decided to focus on. So it took one good year to experiment, going to Hackathons here and there, before registering the company and having Jimin join as the other cofounder.
역설적이게도 홍대의 대표와 제가 회사를 설립하기로 결정했을 때, 저희는 실제로 어떤 종류의 문제를 해결해야 할지에 대해 명확한 솔루션을 갖고 있지는 않았습니다. 스타트업 여정에 앞서 같은 회사에서 함께 일했음에도 불구하고, 우리는 우선 어느 분야에 집중할 것인지에 대하여 오랫동안 논의해야 했습니다. 그래서 회사를 등록하고, 또 다른 창업 멤버인 화지민 이사를 참여시키기 전에는 여기저기 해커톤에 참여하며 집중 분야를 찾는데 1년이 걸렸습니다.
And I think it took another two years, from mid 2016 to mid 2018 to figure out the long term bet. In those two years, we worked on projects in several domains from IoT to healthcare to GIS/3D visualization to blockchain to big data and AI. I believe that everybody finally agreed that we are in AI and big data business.
창업 초기부터 지금까지를 되돌아보면, 우리는 IoT에서 헬스케어, GIS/3D 시각화, 블록체인, 빅 데이터 및 AI에 이르기까지 여러 영역에서 프로젝트를 진행하여 레퍼런스를 쌓았습니다.
◆ 좋아하는 한국 음식 또는 문화가 있으실까요??
My palate has undergone a certain degree of evolution during my stay in Korea. In my early years, I was a fan of dakkalbi (닭갈비) but since it can be too spicy I settled on food with sort of neutral but natural taste like galbitang (갈비탕).
저는 한국에 있으면서 다양한 음식을 맛보았습니다. 초창기에는 닭갈비 팬이었지만, 너무 매워서 갈비탕처럼 중립적이지만 자연스러운 맛의 음식을 선호하게 되었습니다.
On the cultural side, I love the hiking culture. You may disagree with me to count hiking as culture rather than a way to spend time. I see it as a mindset of the society to stay healthy by having outdoor activities and appreciate the nature. I have been to some of the mountains in Korea and they are very pretty. My favorite is Seorak mountain.
문화적인 면에서, 저는 하이킹 문화를 좋아합니다. 일반적으로 하이킹을 문화로 간주하는 것에 동의하지 않을지도 모릅니다. 하지만 야외활동을 함으로써 건강을 유지하고 자연을 감상하는 것이 사회적으로 긍정적인 문화라고 봅니다. 한국의 몇몇 산들을 가봤는데, 산들은 매우 예쁩니다. 제가 가장 좋아하는 산은 설악산입니다.
◆ Mondrian AI에서 특히 기억에 남는 순간이 있으신가요?
The time when we worked to develop an app for a wearable device company. It’s very challenging from the technical point of view because we’re not familiar with the technology and how it could be done. Plus, we got sort of pressing timeline. With lots of hardwork and sleepless nights, we could deliver and complete the project successfully. I spent few days resting after the project sign-off to take some breathes and recover.
초창기에 웨어러블 기기 회사를 위한 앱을 개발하기 위해 일했을 때가 가장 많이 기억에 남습니다. 기술적 관점에서 보면 매우 도전적이었습니다. 왜냐하면 저희는 기술을 통해 결과물이 어떻게 이루어질 수 있는지에 대해 경험이 없었어요. 게다가 프로젝트 기간이 많이 촉박했기 때문에 밤을 새워가며 일을 했고, 결국에 성공적으로 완수할 수 있었습니다. 저는 프로젝트 완료 후, 체력을 회복하기 위해 며칠을 쉬었었던 기억이 있습니다.
◆ 기술총괄이사님로서 개발자 분들에 바라는 점이 있으실까요?
I can say two things: passion and ownership.
Passion. Do the work because you love it, because it is something you passionate about. Passion will make you keep learning and grow to become the expert of the field regardless of your educational background. Passion sparks your curiousity and excites you to experiment with things. With lots of experimentation, you will become excellent in your craft.
Ownership. You are the owner of your work. This means that the quality of your deliverables is decided by you. You can make things that just work OK and satisfy the requirements or you can make things that wow people because you want the best quality to come out of it.
If you’re young and find it less of a joy to do your work, you need to find the area where you can be more passionate and get the sense of ownership. Otherwise, you might be wasting your true talent.
저는 ‘열정’과 ‘소유’ 두 가지를 말하고 싶습니다.
열정. 여러분들이 그 일을 좋아하고, 그 일을 열정적으로 하셨으면 좋겠습니다. 열정이 있다면 학력과 상관없이 계속 배워서 그 분야의 전문가가 될 수 있습니다. 열정은 호기심에 불을 붙이며, 다양한 실험하도록 자극합니다.이러한 경험이 여러분의 기술을 높이는데 도움이 될 것입니다.
소유. 여러분 자신이 주인입니다. 이것은 여러분의 결과물의 퀄리티가 여러분에 의해 결정된다는 것을 의미합니다.
지금 하고 있는 일에 대한 기쁨이 줄어들고 있다면, 더욱 열정적으로 일 할 수 있는 분야를 찾는 것이 좋습니다. 그렇지 않으면 진정한 재능을 찾지 못하고 낭비하게 될 지도 모릅니다.
◆ 다른 회사와 비교했을 때, Mondrian AI의 강점은 무엇일까요?
Everybody in the company is a leader in the sense that each can lead an initiative or project and deliver what is expected. This is amazing to see this happening at the company level.
Business-wise, I believe that Mondrian AI is one of the few companies in Korea that can execute technically challenging AI/big data initatives, be it projects or product/service development.
회사 내의 모든 사람들이 각자 계획과 프로젝트를 주도하고, 예상되는 문제점들을 서로 공유하고 있다는 것이 장점이라고 생각합니다.
비즈니스 측면에서 볼 때, 우리 Mondrian AI가 프로젝트나 제품/서비스를 연구개발하는 데 있어서, AI/빅데이터 기획부터 이를 구현할 수 있는 몇 안 되는 국내의 기술기업이라고 생각합니다.
◆ Mondrian AI가 미래에 어떤 기업이 되어 있기를 바라시는지 궁금합니다.
The decision to focus on AI/big data was crucial to shape the current state of the company. I can only see how the company grow into one of the major enterpise AI/big data players in Korea and the region in the future. It currently has unfair early-mover advantage due to the decision to focus on AI/big data.
AI/빅데이터에 집중하기로 한 결정은 회사의 현주소를 형성하는 데 결정적이었습니다. 이러한 결정이 앞으로 Mondrian AI가 한국을 비롯한 주변국가의 주요 기업 AI/빅데이터 업체 중 하나로 성장하게 되기를 바랍니다.
As long as the company keeps investing on R&D to build strong products / services and recruits capable and passionate talents, the future is bright.
앞으로 주력으로 내세울만한 제품/서비스를 구축하고, 능력 있고 열정적인 인재를 영입하기 위해 연구개발에 계속 투자한다면 기업의 미래는 밝을 것이라고 봅니다.
◆ 나에게 있어 Mondrian AI란?
A place where dreams meet passion and hardwork to become reality.
꿈이 현실이 되기 위해 열정과 고된 노력을 만나는 곳.
◆ 마지막으로, 하고 싶은 말 자유롭게 부탁 드립니다.
If you’re considering working at a startup, think of it as a place where you can learn five times bigger in a year compared to a year in a big enterprise. This experience will compound over the years and only after a few years, you will be the expert. With such expertise, you will have more freedom to choose what kind of company and compensation you are fine to work with.
스타트업에서의 경험은 대기업에서의 1년에 비해 5배는 더 크게 배울 수 있는 곳이라고 생각합니다. 이 경험은 여러 해 동안 쌓인다면 그 분야의 전문가가 될 것입니다. 그러한 전문지식을 갖추게 된다면, 여러분들이 원하는 회사를 선택할 수 있고 더 많은 선택의 자유를 갖게 될 것입니다.
Working at a good startup will be one of your best investments. You learn and then you earn.
좋은 스타트업에서 일하는 것이 가장 좋은 투자 중 하나가 될 것입니다.
