장르 작가 연합회 간담회 참석 Attending a Meeting of Genre Writers Aliance
2018년 12월 22일 토요일, 광화문의 한 공유거실에서 열린 장르 작가들의 송념 모임에 참가했습니다. 이 모임에는 미스테리 협회, 괴이학회, 환상웹진 거울, 한국SF협회 등에 소속된 작가들이 모였습니다. 정말 한 자리에 모이기 힘든 분들이 모였습니다.
On Saturday, December 22, 2018, I participated in a farewell meeting of genre writers held in a public living room in Gwanghwamun. The meeting was attended by writers from the Mystery Society, the Horror Association, the Fantastic Webjin Mirror, and the Korea SF Association. It’s hard to get together.
한국 장르 문학이란 무엇일까요? What is Korean genre literature?
장르 문학이란 해외에서는 ‘fuzzy’ 라는 단어로 정의내리고 있습니다. 곧 경계가 흐릿하고, 서로 겹치기도 하다는 뜻입니다. 한국에서의 장르문학은 대게 장르 소설(genre fiction)을 가리킵니다. 원래 장르 소설(genre fiction)은 대중소설(popular fiction)이나 상업소설과 거의 동일한 의미로 사용되는 단어입니다. 즉, 대중소설의 한 형태로 장르적 관습(genre conventions)을 따르는 소설군을 가리킵니다.
Genre literature is defined as ‘fuzzy’ abroad. That means the boundaries are blurry, and they overlap each other. Genre literature in Korea usually refers to genre fiction. Genre fiction is a word used in almost the same meaning as a popular novel or a commercial novel. This means a group of novels that follow the genre convention as a form of popular novels.
본래 문학은 소설만을 가리키는 게 아니지만, 한국에선 순수문학 또는 순문학이라는 용어가 주류 문학을 가리킨다는 암묵적 권위를 얻고 있기에, 순문학에 포함되지 않는 종류들이라는 대항적 의미로 ‘순’ 대신 ‘장르’를 붙이고 있습니다. 고로 한국에서 장르문학이란, 순수문학과 대비되는 소설들을 묶어서 일컫는 표현에 가깝기 때문에 국내에서 장르문학이라고 말하는 경우 장르소설과 치환해도 별 문제 없을 것입니다.
Literary is not only about novels, but in Korea, the term pure literature or pure literature is implicitly regarded as a reference to mainstream literature, so instead of ‘serving’ it is a form that is not included in pure literature. In Korea, genre literature is more like an expression that refers to novels that are contrasted with pure literature, so if you say genre literature in Korea, there will be no problem replacing genre novels.
장르 문학 작가들이 모였다는 것의 의미는 무엇일까요? What is the meaning of the collection of genre literature writers?
송년 모임으로 만난 각 장르에서 활동하는 작가들은 일제히 지면 확보, 유통 생태계, 느슨한 연대와 같은 주제를 나누었습니다. 한국에서는 솔직히 장르 문학이 건전한 환경에서 자라나지 못해 왔습니다. 단, 활발히 활동하는 작가들의 노력과 의지, 열린 마음의 독자들이 있어 왔기에 생존해 왔습니다.
The writers from each genre met at the year-end gathering shared topics such as securing ground, distributing ecosystems, and loose solidarity. In Korea, frankly, genre literature has not been grown in a healthy environment. However, it has survived because there have been active writers’ efforts and readers of open-mindedness.
이제 작가들은 서로 연대해 함께 웹진을 만든다던가, 크라우드펀딩으로 출판을 한다던가, 본인이 주력하는 장르를 마케팅하기 위한 대안을 세우는 등 자체 행동을 하고 있습니다. 본디 글을 쓴다는 행위가 개인적이고, 고독하며, 협업 창작을 할 시에도 내밀한 네트워킹으로 일이 진행되어 갔습니다. 그런 의미로 이번 장르 문학 장가들의 모임은 남다른 의미가 있다고 생각합니다.
Authors are now acting on their own, creating webzines together, publishing them with crowdfunding, and creating alternatives to market their genre. Even when the act of writing a body piece was personal, solitary, and collaborative, things went on in-depth networking. In that sense, I think the meeting of literary masters of this genre has a special meaning.
자주 만나요! See you all the time!
작가들과 즐거운 대화를 나누고, 2차 술자리까지 파한 후, 다들 헤어질 때 “자주 만나요~”라는 인사를 나누었습니다. 정말 자주 만나 생각을 나누고픈 마음이 들었습니다. 어떤 장르든 글을 쓴다는 것은 힘든 일입니다. 같은 직업군의 사람들이 모여 건설적 미래를 논의하고, 긍정적 생태계를 일구고픈 욕망을 나누는 행위는 아름답고 멋졌습니다.
After having a pleasant chat with the writers, breaking up with the second drink, we all said, “See you all the time.” I really wanted to meet you often. Writing in any genre is hard work. It was beautiful and wonderful to have people of the same profession come together to discuss a constructive future and share the desire to build a positive ecosystem.
스토리 산업의 뼈대를 이루는 작가들이 정당한 보상과 대우를 받는 생태계, 한국 장르 문학이 튼튼한 토대를 이루어, 독자들은 보다 풍요로운 독서를 즐길 수 있게 되길 바랍니다.
Hopefully, the story industry’s core authors will be able to build a solid foundation for proper compensation and treatment of Korean genre literature so that readers can enjoy more affluent reading.
