Hello, my name is Mihee Kim, the founder and CEO of Tutoring. This article is to share the conference that took place 2 weeks ago in Manila. The main purpose of the conference was to share the role and mission of the Tutoring tutors and the direction of our tutor community.

Three years ago, we started with less than 20 tutors and now we have over one thousand tutors.

 Among them, about 100 tutors in the Philippines, 30 admin staff in the Philippines, and the HQ staff gathered in Manila for the first time. Most of them had to fly in for the conference, rent Airbnbs, or drive for over two to three hours to get here. Just the fact that so many tutors from different locations gathered in one place was very exciting and touching at the same time.

It was especially emotional for me because of the difficulty we went through in the beginning of the business, with a small pool of tutors and students.

All of the Tutoring tutors I’ve met in person seemed very positive and friendly. They were very excited to meet each other in person after working remotely for a long time. Some of them even got teary during listening to our speeches and watching video clips.

We also had the Best Tutor Award and ceremony. I could really feel how everyone works with passion when working at Tutoring.

We wanted to be original.
우리는 다르고 싶었습니다.

Compared to the traditional online English teaching platforms where professional tutors commute to a call center and work under the micromanagement system, we wanted to give our tutors more freedom and flexibility, which would hopefully result in a better quality of teaching for our students.

We have a lot of tutors who had to leave their professional careers for various reasons, who wanted to focus on the quality of the lessons through the freedom of time and space, and they have become our passionate tutors.

You might be wondering why the Tutoring team puts in a lot of effort into active encounters and conversations with the tutors who are scattered all over the world. 

It is because we cannot communicate as effectively since we are so far away from each other which can result in frustration and miscommunication.

We want to create an active community and communication route where you can work with a sense of community and pride.

We still have a lot of improvements to make. That’s why we work hard.

We would like to promise that we will upgrade and improve the platform so that our tutors can solely focus on high-quality lessons. We will set up a system for an agile response within this year.

Also, having the most number of curriculum in the industry is a huge advantage for the students. However, I assume that it creates difficulties for tutors who have to teach lessons with the vast curriculum. With a more detailed teaching guide, we will continuously develop contents regarding the topic card so that you can give even more satisfying lessons to your students.

And as we have done so far, through sustainable and stable growth, we promise to increase the number of quality jobs for more and more tutors.

With this mission, we are changing the system of the past and connecting tutors and students all over the world. It’s just a small step and we have a long way to go.

전세계의 튜터링 튜터분들에게 감사드립니다.

안녕하세요, 튜터링의 창업자이자 대표 김미희입니다.

2주전 다녀온 컨퍼런스 현장을 전세계에서 활동 중이신 천명 이상의 전문 튜터 모든들께 전달드리고 그날의 주요 내용 중 하나였던 튜터링 튜터의 역할과 미션, 그리고 저희 회사의 튜터 커뮤니티를 위한 방향성을 공유드리기 위해 글을 남깁니다.   

2019년 6월 6일. 튜터링 튜터 첫 마닐라 컨퍼런스 후기 

3년 전 당시 20명도 안되던 튜터가 현재는 전세계 1000여명 -

이분들 중 필리핀의 100여명의 튜터와 30여명의 필리핀 현지 스탭, 그리고 본사 멤버들이 마닐라 한자리에 처음 모였습니다. 대부분 컨퍼런스를 위해 비행기를 타고와서 에어비앤비 숙박을 이용하거나 두세시간 운전해서 온 분들이였습니다. 이렇게 많은 해외 튜터 분들이 한자리에 모인것만으로도 참 뭉클했습니다. 특히 튜터풀과 학생풀 양쪽을 모으기가 참 힘들었던 사업 초가 어른거려 더 마음 한켠이 시큰했고요.

실제로 만난 수 많은 튜터링 튜터들이 대부분 정말 긍정적이고 순수하다는 느낌을 많이 받았습니다. 원격으로만 일하다 처음 본 얼굴들에 서로 얼싸안고 너무나 반가워했습니다. 특히 저희가 준비한 스피치와 영상 중간 중간에 감격에 차 환호하시거나 벅찬 눈물을 흘리시기도 했습니다. 베스트 튜터 시상식도 있었는데, 상을 받은 분들의 메시지가 마음을 울립니다. 모두가 얼마나 선의와 열정을 갖고 교육을 하시는지 느껴지는 하루였습니다.  

우리는 다르고 싶었습니다.

저희는 기존의 전문 튜터분들이 콜센터에 출퇴근 근태관리를 받고 마이크로 매니징을 받는 환경에서,  조금 더 자율과 권한을 드리고, 수강생과 더 나은 티칭 스타일로 호흡하시길 원했습니다. 다른 여러 이유로 경력 단절을 겪으신 전문 튜터분들, 그리고 시공간의 자유를 통해 더욱 수업의 질에 집중하고자 하시는 튜터분들 모두가 저희의 튜터링 튜터가 되어주셨고, 더 많은 열정을 보여주고 계십니다.

혹자는 튜터링팀이 왜 전세계에 흩어져 있는 튜터들과 적극적인 만남과 대화에 많은 노력을 기울이는지 궁금해하실것 같습니다.  멀리 원격에 있는 만큼 저희의 목소리가 쉽게 전달되지 않고, 답답한 경험이 많으실것 같습니다.  앞으로 더욱 소속감과 프라이드를 느끼고 활동하실 수 있도록 커뮤니티 활성화와 적극적인 커뮤니케이션을 위해 노력하겠습니다.

아직 부족한게 많습니다. 그래서 더 노력합니다. 

튜터들 분들이 조금 더 양질의 수업에 집중하실 수 있도록 올해안에 튜터링 튜터의 시스템 고도화와 개선 착수를 약속 드리고 싶습니다. 애자일 대응을 위한 체계를 올해 안에 마련하겠습니다.

또한 다양한 커리큘럼이 수강생에게 매우 큰 장점이지만 튜터분들이 어려워하시는 부분일거라 짐작합니다. 더 정교화된 티칭가이드로 나만의 학생들과 더 만족스러운 티칭 경험을 가지실 수 있도록 콘텐츠 개발에 더욱 박차를 가하겠습니다.

또한 지금까지 그래왔듯이 지속가능한 안정적인 성장을 통해 더 많은 전세계 전문튜터들의 양질의 일자리를 늘릴것을 약속합니다.  

튜터들이 있기에 저희는 존재합니다.

튜터들의 수업과 학생의 만족도, 그들의 인생에 주는 임팩트의 크기가 곧 우리의 잠재력의 크기입니다. 튜터분들이 어떻게 하면 더 큰 소속감과 프라이드를 갖고 일할 수 있을지 더 많은 고민과 더 많은 실행을 하겠다고 다짐해봅니다. 저희 튜터링 튜터의 미션과 아이덴티티에 대해 소개드리고 글을 마치겠습니다.
